This project proposes the alteration of a shop into an art gallery, situated in the old city quarter of Castelo Branco.
The shop is a ground floor space, with a shop window and an entrance facing Santa Maria street, with another access in the back yard adjacent to the city walls.
The project intends to maximise the existing light conditions and simultaneously act in a clear way in regards to the space distribution.
We suggest the construction of an architectural element in the transition area between the entrance and the back yard, creating a spatial hierarchy and highlighting the 3 different functional areas: the main exhibition room, the middle exhibition room, the collection and work area.
The proposed construction, made of cardboard plaster, is defined as a structuring element and creates a new spatial reading. This element associated with sliding MDF panels allows a great flexibility in the usage of the space, enabling to open, close or partially open the main room and the middle room, depending on the exhibition needs.
